Super Mario Bros

Learn About the Game Super Mario Bros

Super Mario Bros puts you in charge of Mario on a side-scrolling quest. Nintendo released it in 1985 with a simple goal. You reach the flagpole and move to the next stage. Bowser kidnaps Princess Toadstool. You cross the Mushroom Kingdom to stop him. A second player can use Luigi and take turns.

Levels scroll from left to right across eight worlds with four stages each. You see grassland courses, underground caves, water routes, and castle runs. Hidden blocks hold coins, power-ups, and the rare 1-Up. Pipes lead to short bonus rooms and fast routes. Warp zones let you skip ahead and change the pace. Enemies include Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Piranha Plants, Cheep Cheeps, Buzzy Beetles, Lakitu, and Hammer Bros.

Movement rewards timing and momentum. Short taps give small hops. Longer presses clear wide gaps. The timer pushes steady progress across each course. You gain points for enemies, coins, and time left on the clock. Music by Koji Kondo marks tension and victory. The structure helped define side-scrolling platform design for years.
